JOHANNESBURG.
THE DEPARTMENT of Water Affairs (DWA) is poised to pounce on a gold-mining outfit that has been at the heart of violent protests on the West Rand for allegedly contaminating parts of a major river system.
Pamodzi mine controversy drags on Aurora Empowerment Systems, whose board members included President Jacob Zuma's nephew Khulubuse Zuma, Nelson Mandela's grandson Zondwa Mandela and businessman Thulani Ngubane, was seen as the saviour of liquidated mining company Pamodzi Gold when it took over two of its mines in 2009.
Members of the controversial Bhana family – of liquidated airline Velvet Sky and Aurora mining notoriety – appear to have seized yet another questionable financial opportunity, this time involving an insolvent gold mining company on the West Rand.
Once again, however, it seems that the father-and-son team of Solly and Fazel Bhana have tried to keep their involvement under wraps.
Thousands of jobless Blyvoor miners struggling to make ends meet are desperate to get back to work.

The provisional winding up of the Blyvooruitzicht Gold Mining Company is of concern to the Federation for a Sustainable Environment for a number of reasons. Central to our concerns is the funds that have been made available for environmental rehabilitation in terms of s41 of the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act 28 of 2002.
CHANTAL Whiller and her husband did their homework before they moved their family to an upmarket country estate at the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site.
Whiller’s husband, who worked on the mines in Welkom, had heard about the toxic and potentially radioactive acid mine drainage (AMD) seeping into the Cradle from the Witwatersrand’s abandoned goldfields.
“He took satellite photos and had our water tested,” remembers Whiller. “Everything was fine – that’s why we bought here.”
The FSE has published it annual report. Koos Pretorius, Chairman of the FSE, wrote a compelling report. The full annual report is an attachment.
We are gratified at the performance of the Federation for a Sustainable Environment (FSE) during 2013.
In my seven years as chairperson of the FSE I have had the privilege to see the FSE’s growth and its establishment as one of the leading NGOs within the mining industry, notwithstanding its limited funding. It is critical that the FSE continues in 2014 to lobby and advocate not only for the mining industry and our Government’s responsible dealing with the legacy of historical poor, environmental practices but for intra-generational equity, that is, that the interests of both current and future generations are not compromised by unsustainable mining authorisations and irresponsible mining practices.

Millions of South Africans are exposed to radioactive radon gas in their homes and workplaces every day, as the naturally occurring gas escapes through cracks in the earth. The second leading cause of lung cancer in several countries, radon breaks down and when inhaled, decaying atoms emit alpha radiation that can damage the DNA. There are no safe levels of radon concentration. The United States Environmental Protection Agency emphasises any radon exposure has some risk of causing lung cancer. Carte Blanche investigates why South Africa has no regulations to protect against radon accumulation in the home and what you can do to test your home and prevent lung cancer. Watch the video here.
