FVO reageer op berigte oor megaslikdam

Verlede week se berigte in Sake 24 oor die bedreiging wat boere en omgewingsgroepe vir Mine Waste Solutions se beydrywighede in die Stilfontein-gebied inhou, het die volgende reaksie van die Federasie vir ‘n Volhoubare Omgewing ontlok:


Die artikels van Sake 24 (gepubliseer in Rapport, Beeld en Miningmx), het ernsitge twyfel gewerp op die karakter en motiewe van me Mariette Liefferink, uitvoerende hoof van die Federasie vir ‘n Volhoubare Omgewing (FVO), en die FVO.

Die aanname word gemaak dat die FVO saam met vier grondeienaars werk om hulle te help om hoe pryse vir hul grond te bekom deur die lewe vir Mine Waste Solutions (MWS) “ondraaglik” te maak. Dit is na ons mening ‘n verdraaiing van die feite en ‘n wanvoorstelling van die waarheid.

Ons is nooit die kans gegun om op die artikels te reageer voor publikasie nie. Ons is van besliste mening dat die FVO ernstig te nagekom is in die artikels en dat Liefferink se reputasie deur wanvoorstellinge geskaad is.

Die FVO is ‘n organisasie sonder winsbejag wat tot die voordeel van die bree publiek en omgewing optree. Die hoofdoel van die FVO is om ekologiese volhoubaarheid van ontwikkeling te verseker en die oordeelkundige gebruik van natuurlike hulpbronne te bevorder; om stappe te doen, insluitende regstappe, in situasies wat ‘n negatiewe maatskaplike, ekonomiese of omgewingsimpak op mense en die omgewing kan he. In regsaksies word die FVO bygestaan deur onder meer die Legal Resources Centre en die Centre for Environmental Rights. Die FVO se aksies moet ten alle tye voldoen aan die verhewe morele verwysingsraamwerk van bogenoemde organisasies en hulle donateure en enige verdagmaking van ons motiewe kan geweldige implikasies vir alle betrokkenes inhou.

Onder meer word beweer dat “een van die land se voorste omgewingsaktiviste al haar kragte inspan om een van die belangrikste opruimsprojekte in die mynbedryf te ontwrig.”

FSE - DONATION OF TREES AND TREE PLANTING IN SIMUNYE, WEST RAND IN ASSOCIATION WITH SOUTH DEEP MINE

The FSE, in association with Gold Fields’ South Deep Mine, donated 40 white Karee Trees (Searsia penduline) during Arbor Week to the mining affected community of Simunye in the West Rand and participated in the tree planting ceremony with the community of Simunye, the local Municipality and officials from South Deep Mine.  The FSE also delivered a presentation during the ceremony.

Radon Alert - Carte Blanche

Millions of South Africans are exposed to radioactive radon gas in their homes and workplaces every day, as the naturally occurring gas escapes through cracks in the earth. The second leading cause of lung cancer in several countries, radon breaks down and when inhaled, decaying atoms emit alpha radiation that can damage the DNA. There are no safe levels of radon concentration. The United States Environmental Protection Agency emphasises any radon exposure has some risk of causing lung cancer.
